Chapter 1.1 Introduction to Fashion, Apparel & Costume

  • Fashion is a social process in which new styles and trends become popular and accepted by society. It reflects art, culture, and changing lifestyles.

  • Apparel refers to the actual garments made from fabric, leather, knits, or other wearable materials.

  • Costume is clothing worn for a specific purpose, such as rituals, performances, ethnic traditions, or historical occasions.

Why Study Fashion & Costume History?

  • It helps us understand the origin and development of modern fashion.

  • Fashion changes over time due to social, cultural, political, and economic influences.

Significance of Clothing

Clothing serves several purposes:

  • Protects the body from climate and environment.

  • Reflects religious beliefs and aesthetic values.

  • Indicates social and economic status.

  • Expresses group identity and cultural belonging.

  • Clothing and accessories together form the vocabulary of clothing.

Theories on the Origin of Clothing

  • Protection Theory: Clothing developed to protect humans from weather and nature.

Clothing of Primitive Man
